Canada expands definition of "immediate family member" in relation to COVID-19 travel ban
With the goal of preventing the spread of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the Canadian government introduced strict travel restrictions for foreign nationals looking to travel to Canada by air. Canadian citizens, permanent residents and protected persons were exempted from these measures, as were the "immediate family members" of Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
Over the past few days, the definition of immediate family members has been the subject of discussion. This definition was recently expanded to include parents/step parents, as well as guardians and tutors. The current definition of immediate family members excluded from air travel restrictions, involves:
The spouse or common-law partner of the person
A dependent child of the person or of the person’s spouse or common-law partner
A dependent child of a dependent child (as mentioned in the bullet above)
The parent or step-parent of the person or of the person’s spouse or common-law partner
The guardian or tutor of the person
